Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is like an iceberg, with some aspects visible above the waterline and others lurking beneath the surface. Just like an iceberg's hidden mass affects its buoyancy, the unseen challenges of ADHD can significantly impact a person's schoolwork, friendships, and organisational skills. However, with understanding, support, and effective strategies, individuals with ADHD can navigate these challenges and thrive.


The Visible Above-Water Challenges:


Teachers and parents often notice certain aspects of ADHD that are visible above the waterline. These might include:


1. Inattention: Children and teenagers with ADHD can struggle to concentrate on tasks, follow instructions, or complete assignments. They might seem forgetful and easily distracted.


2. Hyperactivity: Some individuals with ADHD exhibit high energy levels, restlessness, and a tendency to fidget or squirm. They might struggle to sit still, especially in situations that demand prolonged focus.


3. Impulsivity: Impulsivity can lead to speaking or acting without thinking, difficulty taking turns, and making hasty decisions. It might also affect the ability to wait one's turn in conversations or games.

3. Organisation Techniques: Teach organisational skills such as using colour-coded folders, planners, or digital tools to keep track of assignments and deadlines.


4. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness can assist in emotional regulation, reducing impulsivity and improving focus.


5. Peer Education: Educating classmates about ADHD can foster understanding and empathy. It can help create a supportive environment where differences are embraced.


6. Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate successes, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement encourages continued effort and progress.


7. Parent-Teacher Collaboration: Open communication between parents and teachers allows for tailored support in the classroom and at home.
