Boosting Self-Esteem in Children and Young People with ADHD

Did you know that children and young people with ADHD hear 20,000 more negative messages from parents, teachers, and other adults than their peers who do not have ADHD!


This can cause:

✋ Low Self-Esteem: Constant criticism can make children with ADHD doubt their abilities, leading to reduced self-confidence and lowered self-esteem.

✋ Academic Struggles: The lack of positive reinforcement can hinder academic performance, further reinforcing negative perceptions about their capabilities.

✋ Emotional Distress: The accumulation of negative messages can result in emotional distress, anxiety, and feelings of worthlessness.

✋ Social Isolation: The struggles to meet expectations and the fear of judgment can lead to social isolation and difficulties in forming meaningful relationships.

✋ Behaviour Problems: As a reaction to constant negativity, some children with ADHD may exhibit challenging as a form of coping mechanism.


As parents, teachers, peers and ADHD coaches, we can positively impact and empower children with ADHD by:


🔍 Educating and Raising Awareness:

Understanding that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition and not a behavioural choice is crucial. Educating ourselves and raising awareness can foster empathy and approach children with ADHD with patience and support.


💡 Encouraging a Growth Mindset:

Promoting a growth mindset is key in helping these children embrace their unique journey. Emphasise the value of effort and perseverance, and celebrate their progress and accomplishments, regardless of the outcome.


🤝 Creating a Supportive Environment:

Parents and teachers can collaborate to establish a nurturing environment that recognises and appreciates the strengths and abilities of children with ADHD. Open communication, individualised learning, and positive reinforcement can work wonders in building their confidence.


🚀 Focusing on Strengths and Interests:

Every child has their passions and talents. Identifying and encouraging these areas of excellence can be a powerful way to boost self-esteem and foster a sense of accomplishment.


🙌 Implementing Positive Discipline:

Replacing harsh discipline with positive strategies can make a world of difference. Let's focus on learning from mistakes, taking responsibility, and finding constructive solutions to challenges.


🤝 Developing Social Skills:

Social interactions can be challenging for children with ADHD, leading to feelings of isolation. By providing opportunities for social skill development, such as role-playing and group activities, we can help them build and maintain positive relationships with peers.


❤️ Fostering Peer Understanding and Empathy:

Encouraging classmates to develop empathy and understanding towards their peers with ADHD can create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. Awareness sessions or classroom discussions about ADHD can go a long way in building this understanding.
